Diversification of the NWT economy
Yellowknife, NWT – Thanks to CanNor, the Northwest Territories will continue to promote business, employment and tourism opportunities to potential tourists, residents and investors in French-speaking regions across Canada and Europe.
The Honourable John Du
ncan, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), today announced a federal investment of $253,000 to support and expand Francophone marketing and recruitment campaigns.
The Conseil de développement économique des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (CDETNO) will use the funds to continue their activities to attract new residents and investment, increase and improve tourism opportunities and services, recruit and retain qualified employees, and diversify the local economy. In 2009-2010 CanNor provided $225,000 to support a number of targeted initiatives by CDETNO that promoted the territory in Francophone communities.
“Funding for these proactive marketing initiatives demonstrates the Government’s commitment to broaden and grow the Northern economy,” said Minister Duncan, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians.
“By raising awareness about Northern opportunities and attracting investment and new residents to the Northwest Territories, our government is helping to build a diversified and sustainable northern economy.” said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health.
“Our attraction strategies are supported by a number of other organizations, including aboriginal economic development organizations and the Government of the NWT. We are thrilled with CanNor’s support and are confident with the eventual positive impacts on the NWT’s economy,” said CDETNO President, Jean-François Pitre.
This investment is made possible through CanNor’s Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term and capacity building in all three territories.
